Book Editor Qualifications

Education
A bachelors degree or higher is usually required for prospective book editors. The best types of degree for gaining the proper qualifications include English, journalism, communications, and media studies. Other disciplines such as history, art, politics, or the sciences can be beneficial for book editors in those specific fields. Regardless of the type of publishing house you would like to join, it is important to have an in-depth knowledge of literature and a broad base of general knowledge.

Abilities
Grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and spelling skills are the foundation of any successful book editing career. Qualified book editors must have an interest in the technical aspects of writing and a great love of reading. Communication skills are also essential. Editors must be able to succinctly convey their ideas to authors. Organizational and people skills are also important in working with authors and keeping projects on track.

Experience
Those interested in book editing should strive to gain experience editing student publications while in high school and college. Student newspapers and magazines can be a great way to develop and hone your skills. An internship in the publishing industry is always a great addition to any resume and can make a significant difference in establishing your career as an editor.
