Web Designer Qualifications

Education
There are no specific educational qualifications for becoming a web designer; however, a bachelors degree is often required for quality job openings. A bachelors degree in web design is the most obvious path to gain the necessary qualifications, but a degree in a related subject, such as graphic design or computer programming, can also provide a good skills foundation. Your education should focus on visual communication, digital arts and design, multimedia production, web application programming, web publishing, web layout, networking, and content writing. In addition to degree programs, many web designers obtain certification through a national accreditation body to showcase their expertise.

Abilities
Web designers possess a strong mix of both design and development skills. You should be a talented graphic designer and proficient in common web design software programs. You will also need to be well-versed in a variety of web development programming languages, such as HTML, CSS, PHP, SQL, Javascript, and Flash. A background in search engine ranking optimization has also become an important part of effective web design. You will need to understand how to make pages that are easily navigated and indexed by all major search engines.

Experience
Web designer jobs can be highly competitive, so related experience is essential. While in school, you should be sure to develop a portfolio of quality work covering a wide range of formats and functionalities. Take advantage of any internship or job placement opportunities your school may offer.
