Education
Many bookkeeping job qualifications require no more than a high school diploma or equivalent in order to apply for a position. Some do require a college degree in a related field such as business or accounting. A two-year associates degree may be sufficient to qualify; however, a bachelors degree can do a great deal to further advance your career. Companies will also provide you with formal training in their bookkeeping procedures before you start on the job.

Bookkeepers are an important part of any financial team. It is essential that bookkeepers be extremely detail oriented, as even a minor mistake can sometimes have large repercussions down the line. A successful bookkeeper should also possess good communication skills and the ability to multitask. Computer skills are another pivotal qualification for anyone looking to become a bookkeeper. Almost all bookkeeping in now performed on computers. Some experience with computer accounting software can make you an ideal potential candidate.
Experience
The best way to demonstrate your experience is through certification. Certification will verify that you have obtained the skills that companies are looking for. There are several different bookkeeping certifications available through various training programs. In order to apply for certification, you will need to have worked as a bookkeeper for at least two years. Additional education may be required to maintain your certification.
