Receptionist Qualifications
Education Qualifications vary by industry, but generally receptionists need to have a high school diploma or equivalent. Some companies may prefer applicants with some college education, but a degree is typically not required. Receptionists often receive their training on the job. You will be trained in telephone system operation, computers, and proper company protocols for greeting visitors, as well as receive general background information about the company and services it provides.
Abilities Good customer service skills are essential for work as a receptionist. You will often represent a visitor's first impression of a company, so it is important to convey a courteous, professional, and helpful demeanor. You will need to have an excellent speaking voice and be a skilled active listener. Computer skills are also important. A receptionist will be expected to be familiar with standard software programs such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Experience Customer service experience can be beneficial when applying for a receptionist position. This could be anything from retail work or waiting tables to telemarketing. Be sure to highlight any computer experience you may have or experience even loosely related to the industry where you will be applying.
