Games Designer Qualifications

Education
The minimum educational qualification for a career as a games designer is typically a bachelors degree in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, or game design. Coursework should include classes on game software development, game programming, audio programming, design animation, integrated video technology and design, software engineering, level design, game prototyping, and computer modeling. The most qualified applicants will have some level of training in multiple computer languages.

Abilities
A video game designer should have a fundamental love of gaming. Successful designers need to have a balance of skills, both creative and analytical. You will need strong problem-solving abilities to program and correct complex computer software. You will also need a strong artistic side in order to develop unique and visually appealing characters, environments, and storylines. Qualified applicant should be adept at organization, time management, and be able to work in a team environment.

Experience
Jobs in games design are extremely sought after and highly competitive. You'll need all the experience you can get. At a bare minimum, you should try to have some practical computer programming and graphic design experience before hitting the game designer job market. Internships while still in school can be a great way to hone your skills and gain valuable work experience. Be prepared to start at the bottom and work your way to the top.
