Business Analyst Qualifications

Education
There are no specific degree qualifications for becoming a business analyst, though a bachelors degree of some kind is often a minimum requirement. There are two educational routes that can prepare a person for a career as a business analyst. Some analysts come from a technical side, with a degree in computer science or engineering, and apply this to business analysis. Others begin with a degree in business and apply their business expertise to technical analysis. It is a difficult career to prepare for as it draws heavily from both technical and business disciplines.

Abilities
A business analyst must have strong business and technological skills. Communication skills are essential as is a background in business processes and project planning and development. Strong technical skills such as computer aptitude and knowledge of engineering systems, modeling, and technical writing are also necessary qualifications. Obviously, a business analyst needs outstanding analytical skills and strong problem solving abilities.

Experience
Some companies expect potential business analyst candidates to possess a formal certification to demonstrate they've earned the proper qualifications. There a few different certifications out there, such as the Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) certification.
