Event Planner Qualifications

Education
There are no formal educational qualifications for becoming an event planner, but a bachelors degree is preferred by most employers. The most closely related bachelors degree programs are those in hospitality management, public relations, hotel management, communications, and business administration. You can also demonstration your skills and qualifications by earning an event planner professional certification.

Abilities
Good communication, both written and verbal, is the number one qualification for success as an event planner. Planners must be detail oriented, able to multi-task, have excellent customer service skills, experience in sales and marketing, and the ability to work well with others, from hourly workers to CEOs. Other important abilities include computer skills, negotiation skills, stress tolerance, dependability, leaderships, and self-control. An event planner needs to be able to function in an unpredictable, sometimes hectic, and constantly evolving environment.

Experience
While education is often preferred, you can become an event planner through related experience. Experience with catering, banquets, or party planning can translate well into a career in even planning. Even work experience such as an administrative assistant may apply as long as you were involved in scheduling and organizing meetings. Having a portfolio of events you've planned or worked on can be a great way to showcase your qualifications to potential employers. Look for internship opportunities to gain valuable experience while still in school.
